Homicide cases require a unique set of considerations, and counsel must consider investigation strategies and legal maneuvering that would not normally apply in other cases. This presentation will give defenders practical training on the kinds of investigation requests, expert conversations, and motions they need to pursue in order to be ethically and constitutionally effective when first assigned to a homicide case.
Presenter Kelson Bohnet is a Senior Assistant Capital Defender with the Kansas Death Penalty Defense Unit. Kelson began his legal career as a Colorado Public Defender in 2013. In 2018, he joined the Virginia Capital Defender system and began representing clients facing the death penalty. He worked there until he joined the Kansas DPDU in 2020. Kelson specializes in issues of pretrial motions and jury selection. He is also active in policy efforts related to criminal justice reform.
